Water quality/sanitation initiatives

RO Filtration System & Maintenance

→ PNF and APMAS

  • With support from PNF, Project RISHI funded and installed a new Reverse Osmosis (RO) filtration system at the Viyyampeta school, replacing a nonfunctional unit to provide students and staff with reliable access to clean drinking water. The system is directly connected to the school taps, offering a more sustainable and cost-effective alternative to bottled water.
  • To ensure long-term functionality, we proposed a 4–5 member teacher maintenance committee responsible for routine monitoring, upkeep, and reporting any issues. We also developed a maintenance plan with cost estimates, demonstrating how funds previously spent on bottled water can be redirected toward maintaining the RO system, ensuring its sustainability for years to come.

Rainwater Catchers

→ Self Funded/Presented

  • We have developed an educational and project-based initiative on the significance of rainwater catchers and how simple materials can be utilized by the students to construct their own rainwater catchers. The purpose of this project is to highlight how rainwater can be easily collected and reused in everyday life, and it serves as a hands-on activity to engage students in building these structures.
  • We address the significance of collecting rainwater from a necessity standpoint and why it is worthwhile from an availability perspective. We then list the potential necessary and easily available materials that can be used to make a rainwater catcher and we provide a step-by-step presentation of how to construct a simple rainwater catcher from these basic materials.

Hygeine Education

→ Self Presented

  • This educational initiative equips students with the knowledge to properly use the school's RO filtration system while promoting good hygiene practices that protect water quality and improve overall community health. The presentation explains the purpose and importance of the RO system, demonstrates proper water collection and maintenance practices, and highlights common hygiene mistakes to avoid. Students also learn the importance of handwashing, including when and how to wash their hands effectively, and how these simple habits can reduce the spread of disease, improve personal health, and contribute to a cleaner and healthier school and community.
